Every manga and anime, no matter how “shallow” it might appear, has at least a few crazy fan theories. Unfortunately, not all of these fan theories make a lot of sense (cough cough, Loid is Anya’s real dad.) In this list, I’m going to go over 10 awesome fan theories that are actually feasible and would be very cool if they turned out to be true.
The entire plot of Spy Family is Loid’s mission to spy on Donovan Desmond, a political extremist and what could be the fuse that ignites an all-out war between Westalis and Ostania. What if this entire mission was completely fabricated by WISE? What if Donovan Desmond is not a threat at all and the entire plot of the manga and anime has been a big fat lie?
Why would Wise make up the Desmond threat and send one of their most iconic and legendary spies on his trail though? Well, simply put, Wise wants Loid to retire and they know that he’d never do so by his own free will. Loid has never been interested in having a family, finding a wife, having a child, or anything that a normal pedestrian would be interested in. His whole life has been dedicated to WISE.
Loid has spent so much time taking on secret identities and running missions for WISE, that many fans theorize he doesn’t even remember his real name! WISE knows this, so now that they want Loid to hang up his hat, they have to basically trick him into falling in love.
So, how much of Loid’s mission was planned by WISE? Anya happens to have a lot in common with Loid. So much so that maybe him choosing her was more than just a coincidence? Anya lost her parents at a young age, just like Loid, which immediately draws him to her. On top of that, she has powers which drew her to him (who wouldn’t want a super spy as their papa?)
Overall, is this theory true? Most likely not. Donovan Desmond hasn’t exactly been evil in the series, which gives this theory some legs, but if this theory were true the writers would’ve probably given us some more tips. I do think this is one of the more convincing theories, though, and may end up predicting the end of Spy x Family.
Anya’s an orphan and we practically don’t know anything about her past and her parents aside from the fact that her real parents are likely dead and Anya was experimented on until she escaped and found herself in the orphanage and eventually as Loid’s daughter (whom he absolutely loves, might I add.)
One other thing that we know, though, is that Anya probably has some memories of her original mother (likely her birth mother.) We know this because during her Admissions Interview for Eden Academy, when Professor Murdoch Swan pressed Anya about her mother, she wound up in tears and Loid had to absolutely demolish a mosquito (and table) to defend his new daughter. While Anya was crying, though, she murmured repeatedly the word “mama”, referring to her mother before Yor.
What if her mother before Yor still wasn’t her birth mother. What if Anya’s birth mother died during birth and the “mama” Anya is referring to was just one of the scientists experimenting on her. It’s a common trope in a lot of media involving child experiments, to have the child imprint on one of the scientists. Sometimes it happens on purpose, sometimes it’s unexpected. This theory states that Anya never actually knew her real mom or dad and that her mama is one of the scientists that experimented on and raised her until she escaped (maybe her mama helped her escape too.)
We haven’t seen much proof for this theory yet, but it does make sense. How would a little girl escape from a lab without help? Why would Anya have fond memories of a mama, but not a papa? The reason I think this theory is possible is just how common the trope is, and Spy x Family doesn’t shy away from tropes. The fact that it leans into tropes is one of the many reasons that the series is so popular!
Spy x Family has shown that Yor is very naive and ignorant to a lot of the “real” world. Sure, she’s a crazy good assassin that could kill anyone she wants with very little trouble, then escape without anyone knowing she was there. But she’s also just plain goofy and socially ignorant. That’s why it doesn’t surprise anyone when she fails to notice Loid’s super spy nature (hyper observant, able to leap off a 20 ft bridge onto a purse thief, etc, etc.)
Loid on the other hand is one of the most observant, pragmatic people in the world. He knows perfectly how to blend in with society, which means he’s also trained to notice little inconsistencies and non-normal behavior. So, he’d definitely notice something as out of the ordinary as Yor using martial arts kicks to prevent a hot tray from spilling on herself. He’d probably also remember that when he first met Yor, she was able to sneak past him, which is unheard of. Loid’s a smart guy and it’s likely he’s put two and two together by now and totally knows Yor is an assassin. He’d at least know she’s not normal, which means he’d probably conduct a little research. With all of WISE at his disposal, it wouldn’t be hard to figure out her true identity.
The manga has stated that Anya was experimented on when she was younger. This fan theory states that before Anya was experimented on, her parents were experimented on. Maybe Anya’s parents had powers as well. Maybe they could also read minds, or maybe they had some other kinds of supernatural powers and Anya’s own powers were just luck of the draw.
This theory doesn’t seem too out of left field, but neither the manga nor the anime has really given us enough evidence either way. We know Anya was experimented on, but we don’t know whether these experiments gave her powers, or whether they were studying the powers. Maybe Anya’s mother was experimented on with her, and Anya remembers the pain her mother went through (hence the “mamas” when the Professor questioned her so harshly.)
I really like this theory because there are so many different directions it could take. This fan theory states that, as the title implies, Anya is a clone. However, “Clone” could mean a few different things, and fans have theorized the different meanings:
We haven’t seen a lot of evidence to support any of these clone theories, however they do make sense and they would fit with the theme of Spy x Family, even if #3 is a little dark. The series definitely leans into tropes and it’s not afraid to get dark at times. We know Anya has a sad, dark past, so fans definitely wouldn't be surprised to find out it gets much darker than her just being an orphan.
