Shonen Jump subscriptions are extremely cheap, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know what you’re getting when you sign up. I’m going to go over exactly what a Shonen Jump subscription gets you; how much manga you can read, how much you can download, and everything else!
The Shonen Jump subscription is definitely a steal and well worth the money. For a couple of bucks a month, you can pretty much read all the manga your heart desires. You can even try out a few of Shonen Jump’s features for free if you know where to look.
I’ll be honest, I used to hate reading digitally, whether it was manga, comics, or regular books. However, since I’ve subscribed to Shonen Jump, I’ve read a lot more digitally.
I still prefer physical manga because it’s easier for me to read (and having a huge collection of manga Omnibus looks awesome.) However, now I’ll just check out a manga on the Shonen Jump app first and if I like the first few chapters (or first 20…) then I’ll start collecting the physical volumes.
Overall, Shonen Jump is one of the cheapest, and most legitimate ways to read manga digitally. The only downside to Shonen Jump is the 100 chapter daily limit. I’ve never come close to hitting it myself, but I know a lot of people may read for hours at a time, especially during rainy / snowy months. Still, though, 100 chapters per day of any manga you want is well worth the $2 / month.
A Shonen Jump Subscription includes a 100 chapter per day reading limit for its subscribers. Once a subscriber has read 100 chapters, they will need to wait until the next day to read another chapter. The Shonen Jump subscription also lets subscribers download 100 chapters total for reading offline.
So, when you subscribe to Shonen Jump, you can:
The 100 chapter / day limit is the only real let down with Shonen Jump. It’d be super nice to be able to read all the manga you want. However, I’ll just throw it out there that I’ve never actually hit this limit in a day. I probably read at an average speed, and usually only read 3 or 4 hours per day max, so if you have similar habits you should be completely fine.
I’m not sure why Shonen Jump has implemented this limit. Back in the day, they used to poll users asking how many chapters everyone read per day. The average was likely around 100 chapters, so that’s what Shonen Jump / Viz set the limit to.
Still, being able to read 100 chapters per day is nice, and you can always download an extra hundred to pad out your reading list. Remember, the 100 download limit is the total number of manga you can download, not the daily / monthly limit.
Shonen Jump does not have all manga. The Shonen Jump app only has manga that is published under Shonen Jump and manga that Viz Media can legally publish. Shonen Jump does have the entire Shonen Jump catalog of 15,000+ manga and is constantly adding more manga to its library for subscribers to read.
For more casual manga fans, it may actually seem like Shonen Jump publishes all of the manga in the world, because in reality they publish a ton of manga (and all of that manga is available on the Shonen Jump app.) Shonen Jump has extremely popular manga like Spy x Family, Chainsaw Man, One-Punch Man, My Hero Academia, and many more. All of these manga can be read right on the Shonen Jump app.
So Shonen Jump doesn’t have all manga. You won’t find any Junji Ito or niche manga like PTSD Radio - but you’ll find most Shonen manga and other mainstream series.
Shonen Jump allows subscribers to read 100 chapters per day of any manga. After a subscriber has read 100 chapters, they will need to wait until the next day to read more. Subscribers can also download 100 chapters to read offline. Non-subscribers can read the first and last 3 chapters of any manga.
While the 100 chapter limit may sound a little low to some people, I’ve personally never hit that limit. 100 chapters is a lot. For some perspective, one Volume of manga will usually have 8 - 12 chapters inside of it. So reading 100 chapters would be equivalent to reading 8 Volumes of manga, which is quite a bit for a single day. I know it does happen, though, especially when the weather outside is crummy or on Wednesday when nothing fun is going on. Still, for only $2 / month, 100 chapters is a pretty fair deal.
If you don’t want to pay for Shonen Jump, there is a little leeway for free users. While you won’t be able to read an entire volume / series, you will be able to read the first and last three chapters of any manga you want. This is a great way to check out a new series, or stay caught up with your favorites.
You cannot read more than 100 chapters on Shonen Jump. Shonen Jump has a 100 chapter daily limit on reading manga, so when a subscriber reads 100 chapters, they’ll need to wait until the next day to read another one. Shonen Jump subscribers can also download 100 chapters total for offline reading.
100 chapters would be the equivalent to about 8 - 10 volumes of manga, so it’s actually a fairly high limit. I wish that Shonen Jump would allow us to read as much manga as we want, but there’s not much we can do, especially when the subscription cost is only $2 / month. I’ve never hit the 100 chapter limit before, but I have a few friends who could easily hit it some days.
Overall, I recommend getting the subscription, even if you think you’ll hit the limit. You can always download 100 other chapters and read them offline, although this may be a bit inconvenient. Most readers aren’t going to break 100 chapters per day, and if you do you can always just wait for the next day!
You can download manga with Shonen Jump. Shonen Jump allows subscribers to download up to 100 chapters for them to read offline. If a subscriber wants to download anymore chapters after reaching the 100 chapter limit, they will need to delete downloaded chapters in order to make room for the new ones.
It’s super useful to be able to download manga, especially if you have to commute via bus, train, etc a lot. I don’t always have a WiFi connection, so being able to just pull out my phone and pass time with a few chapters is really nice. 100 chapters is the equivalent of 8 - 10 volumes of manga, so you can pretty much download a whole series (or at least half of one.
To put things in another perspective - Spy x Family, a super popular manga at the moment, has less than 100 chapters out right now and there’s no telling when it will end. So, you could download and read all of Spy x Family for just $2 / month, and once you’ve read it, you can move onto another great manga series!
To download a manga chapter on Shonen Jump:
Even if you’re not subscribed to Shonen Jump, you can follow these directions and download the first and last three chapters of any manga you want. Remember, no matter what you can only keep 100 downloaded chapters at a time. If you want to delete some chapters to make room for more, just head into your downloads and tap the green checkmark next to the chapter you want to delete. A popup message will appear and have you confirm that you want to delete the chapter to make room for more.
Shonen Jump is weekly. Every week a new Shonen Jump magazine is published. The Shonen Jump subscription that users pay for with the Shonen Jump app is a monthly plan. So when a user subscribes to the Shonen Jump app, they are paying a monthly price. However, the actual Shonen Jump magazine is weekly.
Shonen Jump Weekly is a weekly (of course) magazine. However, it isn't released in the US or many other countries. There was a time when US customers could buy the magazine as a monthly subscription, however that time is long gone.
What this article is about, is the Shonen Jump digital subscription by Viz Media. This subscription is bought and used through the Shonen Jump app. This Shonen Jump subscription is a monthly subscription that costs about $2 / month and lets subscribers read up to 100 chapters of manga every month.
Alright, so that covers all there is to cover about the Shonen Jump subscription. I hope I’ve answered any and all questions you had. Overall, the Shonen Jump subscription is a great service and one of the best ways to read manga digitally, so I hope you can make some use out of it!
