Is Viz Free? Read Before Buying A Subscription

There’s no reason to spend money when you don’t need to, even when talking about a $3 Shonen Jump membership.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Viz is one of the safest and most legitimate places to read manga digitally (Read more about why we believe that Viz is 100% Safe here). While Viz is pushing its Shonen Jump subscription for $3 / month, is it actually possible to get it for free?

    Is Viz Free

Viz is not free. To read Viz you need to purchase a $3 monthly subscription to Shonen Jump via the Shonen Jump mobile app. Viz does offer a free 7 day trial, which can be redeemed once the Shonen Jump app is downloaded, but a fee will need to be paid to continue reading after the week.

Unfortunately, Viz only allows readers to read a preview of their manga for free. If you want to read the entire series of a manga, you’ll need to buy their subscription. The good news is that their subscription:

    • Only costs $3 / month
    • Lets you read any manga in the Viz Media (and Shonen Jump) library
    • Lets readers read the first and last 3 chapters of any manga in the library

If you are caught up on a manga already, then you actually can read it for free (sort of). If you download the Shonen Jump app on your phone / tablet, you can read the last three chapters of any manga in their library. So, if you’re caught up on a manga and just want to continue reading it via Viz’s Shonen Jump app, then you don’t have to pay a single cent!

    How Much Does Viz Cost?

Viz costs $3 per month and users can subscribe to Viz’s Shonen Jump service by downloading the Shonen Jump app on their mobile device. Viz Media offers a one week trial for their Shonen Jump subscription, which new readers can start when they download the app. Viz has no plans to raise the $3 / month price.

$3 / month may sound too good to be true but it’s not. The only thing you should know before subscribing is that you can only read the Viz manga via the Shonen Jump app. Viz Media used to allow subscribers to read manga on their website, but they’ve recently gone all-in with their Shonen Jump app.

You should also be aware of the 7 day free trial. 7 days won’t really make a difference to most people, especially when it comes to a $3 subscription, but why not take free things? I should also note that if you only want to read one or two manga, then Viz also allows you to read the first and last three chapters of any manga in their library. So if you’re caught up with a manga already, and Viz has it on the Shonen Jump app, you can pretty much stay up to date for free by reading the new chapters every week!

Can You Get Viz For Free?

You cannot get a Viz subscription for free. The Shonen Jump subscription plan through Viz Media costs $3 / month. However, Viz Media does offer a 7 day free trial to new subscribers. Viz also allows free access to the first and last three chapters of every manga in their library, even for brand new chapters.

You can use Viz’s Shonen Jump app for free as long as you’re caught up with a series already. Viz lets you read the first and last three chapters of any manga for free. For example, I’m caught up on Spy x Family. So now, when Viz publishes a new Spy x Family chapter to Shonen Jump, I can pull it up and read it without having a subscription. I can do this for any manga I want, so the more manga you’re caught up on, the more you can get out of the free version of Viz’s Shonen Jump app.

How To Get Viz For Free?

The only way to get Viz for free is to sign up for a free trial of Viz is to download their Shonen Jump app onto your mobile device and sign up with a new account. This will give you a 7 day free trial to Viz Media’s Shonen Jump subscription service. You can then read all the manga in their library.

You can also technically use Viz’s Shonen Jump app for free as long as you only need to read a few select chapters. Viz always releases the latest three chapters of a manga for free. So, if you’re caught up on a manga, you can continuously read it on Viz’s Shonen Jump app everytime a new chapter is released.

    Is Shonen Jump Free

Shonen Jump is not free, it costs $3 / month to read the manga available on the Shonen Jump app. Shonen Jump does offer a free 7 day trial to new users, but those users will have to pay when that subscription period is up. Shonen Jump also allows free users to read the first and last 3 chapters of each manga.

It’d be very nice if Viz made their Shonen Jump subscription 100% free, but $3 / month to read any manga in their library is extremely reasonable so I can’t complain. If you can’t pay the $3 though there are some options out there.

First of all, you can sign up for a free trial of Shonen Jump which will let you do anything that a regular subscription would. Just make sure to cancel your subscription immediately so that you don’t get charged after the trial period is up.

The second option is to read your favorite manga another way - either borrow a friend’s, find it at a local library, etc. Once you’re caught up with that manga, you can use the Shonen Jump app for free to read any new chapters that are released. Just remember that only the last three chapters of the manga will be available for free, so you have to stay punctual!

    Viz Free Alternative

Manga PLUS is a free alternative to Viz Media’s Shonen Jump app and subscription service. Manga PLUS lets users read a select few chapters of every Shonen Jump manga. Manga PLUS also has a few series on the app that are available entirely for free, although users can only read each chapter a single time.

Manga PLUS is the best free alternative to Viz Media’s Shonen Jump subscription / app. Manga PLUS has some manga available entirely for free, which is fantastic because it lets you read manga officially without paying a dime. You should know, though, that most chapters on Manga PLUS only allow you to read them one time. As soon as you exit the app or leave the chapter, it will be locked until you subscribe to Shonen Jump.

Manga PLUS also has some manga, like Assassination Classroom, that only have the first 7 or so chapters available for free. After that, they will encourage you to download the Shonen Jump app and sign up for a subscription.

The reason Manga PLUS and Shonen Jump are set up like this is because Viz owns the American publishing rights to Shonen Jump. This means it would be a breach of contract for Manga PLUS (owned by SHUEISHA) to make every chapter available for free. So for now, we’ll just have to be happy with the manga that are free.

Alright, I hope I was able to clear up everything about Viz Media's Shonen Jump subscription, its pricing, and how you can get at least a little taste for free.
